Enhancing Goat Productivity thru FLS-IGM: DA-BAR-TCA Extension Project
(by Maria Asuncion G. Beltran  9/1/2006)

To maximize the potentials of goat raising in Tarlac province, Dr. Ma. Asuncion G. Beltran, dean of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine of Tarlac College of Agriculture conducted Farmer's Livestock School on Integrated Goat Management (FLS-IGM) on April to June 2006 at Tarlac College of Agriculture.

The project, ''Enhancing Goat Productivity Thru Adaptation of Technologies of FLS-IGM'' is funded by Department of Agriculture Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR). The FLS-IGM is a 28-week discovery -based scientific approach to agricultural extension adopting the Farmer Field School (FFS) methodology.

Through this project, farmers are being empowered in order to improve their livelihood through hands-on adaptation of alternative technologies and assessing their relevance and compatibility to their resource endowments.

Since goat raising is one of the most practical livestock ventures a farmer can engage in, goat raisers must be aware of the proper management practices and packaged technologies to ensure bigger and better breeds of goats to guarantee higher profit. Hence, FLS-IGM was conducted at TCA.

After the farmers had finished the FLS-IGM, the Tarlac College of Agriculture loaned out one buck each farmers from its Goat Multiplier Farm. This will improve the quality of farmers' stocks using newer breeds like Boer and Anglo-nubians.

Furthermore, to encourage the farmers to venture on goat rising, an improved marketing system and support mechanism was established for the farmers. Fresh Options, Inc. owned by Dr. Robert Lo buys the goats from farmers at P100 /kg liveweight.

More farmers are now coming at TCA requesting for technical assistance regarding this project. Thus, strengthening the extension program of the Tarlac College of Agriculture.
