VPAP cites Atabay as outstanding Veterinarian

Dr. Edwin C. Atabay, supervising science research specialist and deputy director of the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) at CLSU, was named by the Veterinary Practitioners Association of the Philippines (VPAP) as Most Outstanding Veterinarian in Large Animal Practice for 2007.

Dr. Atabay is actively engaged in the country's carabao upgrading program and serves as trainer in the artificial insemination and pregnancy diagnosis and the dairy production and management programs of PCC for farmers and government extension-workers.

As a scientist, he devotes his time in research, specializing in embryo transfer, ovum pick-up and cloning. His researches which led to the use of high genetics in improving the production of water buffalo meat and milk have created a great impact in the carabao sector, especially among rural farmers.

The involvement of Dr. Atabay in the development of reproductive biotechnology in the country has brought him a number of national recognitions, including the 2002 DA-BAR (Department of Agriculture- Bureau of Research) Directors Awards; the 2003 DA-BAR Secreatry Award; the 2005 DA-BAR National and R&D Paper Award; 2nd Runner-Up, DA-BAR Best Poster Award in 2005; and the 2005 Best Paper Awrd given by the Society of Animal Science.

The VPAP awarding ceremony was held at the Taal Vista Lodge, Tagaytay City, on June 7, 2007.

On the other hand, Dr. Virginia M. Venturina of the CLSU College of Veterinary Science and Medicine also received an award from Philippine Society of Animal Science (PSAS) as 2007 Merial Philippines Outstanding Teacher in Animal Science.
